About Us

Special Olympics Ontario is a volunteer driven organization with some 18,000 athletes and 8,000 volunteers registered across the province. Athletes range in age from 8 - 80 and have the opportunity to train in 18 core sports.

The Haliburton District Community of Special Olympics Ontario has 35 registered athletes and 32 volunteers. Every facet of our community is dedicated to enriching the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.

Red Wolves Off to National Winter Games Feb. 2020.

Exciting News!!!For the second consecutive National games, 5 Haliburton Red Wolves athletes will be competing. Lucas Anderson, Casey Heley, , Kim Buie,, Mari-anne Stammers and Andrew Bourgeois have all qualified to compete in 5 Pin bowling at the Special Olympics National Winter Games in Thunder Bay Ontario, February 2020. Congratulations to them all!

They returned from provincials with Team Gold, and individual Golds for Mari-anne Stammers and Andrew Bourgeois. Individual silver for Lucas Anderson. Congratulations!

Here is a little information about these athletes -

Casey Healey - is 30 years old and joined the Red Wolves bowling team in 2015.  Casey is a valuable employee of Minden Subaru.. He loves riding his snowmobile, ATV and driving his pickup truck,  He loves to fish summer and winter and looks forward to Wednesday night bowling.  For the past 4 years Casey has become an excellent bowler and strives to better his bowling average.  He can add up his scores faster than the score keepers.

Kim Buie - is 24 yrs. old. She joined the Red Wolves 5 Pin Bowling Team in 2015. Kim is a joy to be with, she always has a smile to share. She enjoys bowling and meeting her friends every Wednesday. Kim joins her teammates at the Curling rink on Monday afternoons. In the winter she likes going snowmobiling with her family. In the summer she can be seen boating and playing shuffleboard. One of her all time favourite activities is riding her Golf Cart.

Andrew Bourgeois -  is 34 yrs. old. He joined the Red Wolves 5 Pin Bowling Team in 2008. Andrew loves to bowl, especially on the Wii. He also likes country music, he puts on his cowboy hat and pretends to play the air guitar and drums. Andrew loves to laugh when he is in the company of his friends especially Alyssa! He is a quiet young man who likes clothes. Sometimes he comes to bowling in a sports jacket. He likes to share pictures of his family and friends. Andrew’s favourite hobby is to cut out pictures of cars and trucks.

Mari-anne Stammers - is 49 yrs. old. She joined the Red Wolves in 2009. Mari-anne lives independently with the Support of Community Living. She takes great pride in her apartment and likes to host pot luck suppers. Mari-anne shares her apartment with her roommate Charlie (her five year old cat). Her interests include music, dancing and Television. (Just ask her about Coronation Street) Mari-anne is the person to ask if you need help with laundry. She loves to wash and fold clothes. She doesn’t consider this work. Mari-anne likes to travel especially to places that have loads of stores and places to eat! She loves food occasions, such as family gatherings.

Lucas Anderson  - is 36 years old and joined the Red Wolves in 2016.  Lucas is a very personable young man, best described as a social butterfly.  He can always be counted on to share High 5s!!  Lucse enjoys the team atmosphere of Special Olympics bowling, curling and aoftball.  He is a regular at local music venues and is a bit of a personality when it comes  to his wide assortment of  air instruments.  Lucas delivers County Life newspapers on Thursdays enjoys his groups at Community Living on Tuesday and Thursdays.
